Dragons

Dragor: A large Fire-Breather of the Draconian Faction. Dragor was due to be sacrificed because he did not light the Sacred Fire. As the son of the chief of the Draconian Faction, he was a disappointment. Draconian law stated that any dragon that did not develop oral defenses by a certain age was deemed sickly or cursed. Therefore, he was to be thrown into the Sacred Fire to be recycled.

Los: A small Chameleon Dragon that Jarvok and Asa rescued from being sacrificed by his own clan. The dragon is an expert in reconnaissance, and he is very loyal to Jarvok. Los begins life as an amber-and-tan-colored dragon with silver tones, much like the coloring of a Yorkshire Terrier. His tongue is too big for his mouth, and as he ages it tends to stick out all the time. He has soulful, dark brown eyes, is very affable, and is deeply loyal to Jarvok. His loyalty is equal to Dragor’s.

Raycor:  Acid-Breathing Dragon. Her rider is Zion. She is white and has a flair for the dramatics, much like her rider. Like all Acid Breathers, her wing span is oversized compared to the rest of her body. Raycor’s traits:

  • Denticle scales like Ice-Breathers
  • White (icy, almost iridescent) wings that have a sheen on the underside
  • Eyes: Amber pupils with blue irises
  • Tail is forked (typical demon-style tail)
  • Forked tongue due to fistula

Broader in chest due to her oversized wings

Where do dragons come from?

Dragon design concept

by Danielle M. Orsino

The inspiration for my dragons came from a most unusual place—the little Yorkshire Terrier with the big ears sitting next to the Cheweenie in the picture. His name is Carlos, but once you read Birth of the Fae: Locked out of Heaven, you will come to know him as “Los,” the chameleon dragon. His sister, Penelope, you will meet later on in the series as Lady Penelope, a member of the Aubane Faction of Fae. You may be asking yourself, ‘How did a Yorkie inspire a dragon?’ Well, the answer is not that simple. Carlos is not your typical pup. He is a puppy-mill dog, who was born with some major medical issues, some of which I kept in his dragon persona; however, Carlos’s heart and determination make him a dragon. I took these qualities and built the Draconian society around them. I wanted the dragons to be a fully realized and functioning society—not pets or weapons of destruction. I feel dragons deserve more than to be magical creatures that are always feared or controlled. Now for the physical traits of my fire, acid and ice breathing dragons—those were a bit more difficult. I searched out my veterinarian, Dr. Gil Stanzione of Dakota Vet, for some guidance. I built my dragons from the inside out—from the digestive system to be exact. How? Well, bacteria played a big part, but I can’t give away all my secrets or else you won’t read the book! Now I know your next question is, ‘How do they fly?’ For this I enlisted the assistance of engineering students at Westchester Community college, and with the help of Professor Ioannou (and my own little theory regarding thermals and the albatross), “I have dragons who are not the size of 747s that can glide!” So, jump on the back of one of these dragons and take a ride into the Veil!
